ROY J MAIER, 2005 – Silver Medal, San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, 3/08 Silver Medal, National Women’s Wine Competition, 4/08
2005 Saint Helena Road Roy J Maier Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County Mountains
This is their third vintage, and their finest to date. Winemaker Michael Hirby has produced a deep, fleshy wine that verges on Hedonism. The color is an opaque black plum. Polished aromas of roast coffee, spicy oak, and chocolate frame the solid core of black currant and berry fruit, full in the mouth, lingering on the finish. The tannins are fine-grained. This wine can easily stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the recognized stars of Napa and Sonoma.
MSRP: $49
My Rating: 94 points 2005Saint Helena Road Meritage
Scents of cocoa dust, vanilla, coffee, and Juniper waft from the glass. Reticent at first, with aeration, the wine shows ample berry and cherry fruit. Lush in the mouth, with well-integrated tannins, the wine is a pleasure to drink now. Not quite a weighty as the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, but neither is the price!
MSRP: $29
My Rating: 91 points
